I am honoured to have started my year as President, on what was an excellent and enjoyable Old Brentwoods Day, and on behalf of all OBs thank my predecessor Christian Croll for his successful year in office.
This year, we are marking and celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Society – although, of course, there were alumni from Brentwood long before that! The formation of the ‘official’ Society began at a first meeting of the pioneer OBs in September 1899 with the first formal event being a London dinner in January 1900. It is fascinating to read the notes and minutes from their first meetings; I note that The Chronicle began life within the school’s magazine, The Brentwoodian, and following many years as a standalone publication, The Chronicle has come full circle to be found within the Brentwood School Times.
Like my predecessors, I have some aspirations for my time in office. Continuing from my recent time back at school in the Development Office, I will continue to promote the Foundation and hope to help foster greater OB support for bursaries, to give today’s youth the opportunities that we all enjoyed; a specifically funded ‘OB Bursary’, or maybe a ‘President’s Bursary' would be fantastic!
While, inevitably, OB activity is more centred around the school and the OB Club, the Society’s members are spread far and wide and, following discussions about how we might take the Society and the school’s Alumni team ‘out and about’, we are aiming to visit some parts of the UK in the coming year – watch out for specific details of OB Regional Events.
I am looking forward to my year in office and look forward to meeting as many OBs as possible, and I am particularly keen to increase the engagement of our female and younger OBs. I am very happy to hear from, and the thoughts of, any OB; please do get in touch via the Development Office should you wish to."
