As part of the School’s BTEC Level 3 National extended diploma in Business course, students get to learn about the theories behind the business world but also get vocational teaching to help them gain an experience of what it's really like working in some of the jobs they are learning about.

Introduced into the curriculum in 2020, now that the course is established and proving successful with our students and parents the School would like to develop the vocational side of the course to make the experience that students get by studying the BTEC at Brentwood different to anywhere else they could be educated.  In the first year 67% of students achieved a Distinction or above and now seek the vocational experience to compliment this theoretical knowledge.

Head of Business Studies, Neil Turnbull explains;

“We are looking for any businesses that would be happy to have our BTEC business students come in for a day/ half a day/ a couple of hours or that could come into school to deliver a talk. The plan for the students would be to have a period of time in the lead up to a visit when they would carry out research into the company so they understand where they will be going and have an understanding of the business in advance. They will then look at the course content and material specific to the unit of work they are learning at that time to make the link between theory and vocational practice. The students will work with their teachers to start a project related to your business which will give the students a really valuable experience when they come to work with/visit you.

What we are asking for is any business who would be happy to work with our BTEC business students and business department to provide these opportunities. We are aiming to be able to visit a new business every half term, starting September 2021, leading to 6 trips a year; we ideally would like each business we visit to be different with some of the ideas of industries we would like to visit below:

  • Team Building/Training providers
  • Trip to London analysing visual merchandising displays
  • Recruitment & selection (interview process & HR)
  • Different types of business (Visit a sole trader, Partnership, LTD and PLC) to see the different focus/accountabilities.
  • Marketing company
  • Banking/Finance company or department
  • Digital Marketing company
  • Training provider
  • Customer Service training
  • Decision Making training

If you believe you could help us in anyway and would be happy to let the students get to know more about you and your business then please do get in touch with me at net@brentwood.essex.sch.uk so we can discuss with you further about what can be offered and dates that suit. We really don’t want to add to your workload or take you away from your work but even a chance to observe would be very valuable to the students. You may even find a future employee within our students!”
