Obituaries

Christopher Kay Spurr passed away peacefully on October 10th, 2024 at home in Sydney, Australia. He was 73.

The eldest son of the late Russell and Rosemary Spurr, Christopher was born in Calcutta, India, and spent his formative years growing up in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada before coming with the family to England in 1962.

Like his father and uncle before him he attended Brentwood School, preferring to forgo sixth form in order to pursue creative interests, which in his case were photography and film making. Deciding on what was to become a highly successful career as a Film Editor, he trained first at Rank Studios and then for Granada TV where he quickly mastered his trade, and was highly regarded for his skills and panache.

In 1979 he decided to move to new fields, heading to his grandmother’s birthplace of Australia where he was immediately employed by the ABC and for over 30 years was an admired and greatly respected Film Editor of dramas and documentaries, amongst which “Police Rescue”, “Marriage Acts”, “Bordertown” and “Return To Jupiter” were particular standouts. Chris’ utter professionalism earnt him many accolades and admirers, while his mentorship and support evoked affection and admiration in all who knew, and worked with him.

To say anything about Christopher is to say too little. He was gifted in many areas, was curious about life, a lover of cats and horses. He had an ear for music, a flair for creativity, was passionate for and about the arts; sartorially, was the handsomest and snappiest dresser on the King's Road, adored Formula One cars, political debate, was a charming conversationalist and relished travel to exotic destinations, whilst always keeping time for a beautiful home on which he lavished impeccable care and good taste.

Self-effacing and private to the end, Christopher was a rare and caring spirit, and also a great humorist. He was profoundly loyal and loving of family and friends, especially to his black smoke Persian, Eartha Kitt, who also followed him peacefully on October 18th.

Obituary written by Christopher's brother, Stephan (OB 1970-1972).
