Richard Wells, who taught in the PE Department at Brentwood from 1979-89, died suddenly aged 66 near his home in Oundle on Wednesday January 17th, 2024. Considered as a real mover and shaker as well as a great teacher and inspiration to pupils, he was active in the early days of the Courage Sports Hall and worked to set up sports scholarships sponsored by Barry Hearn.

During his time at Brentwood Richard was a Junior Head of House, helped Brian Odell to run the skiing club, cross country club and the swimming club as well as leading the squash club and the athletics club. He took over from Brian Odell as Head of PE upon his retirement. Former colleague Jim Brown remembers him as a ruthless midfield footballer and an enthusiastic actor - memorably playing a gangster alongside Jim in the annual school production.

From Brentwood, Richard went to Read School,  Drax, as boarding housemaster, then to Laxton Junior School in Oundle. His final post was as Head of Kimbolton Prep School between 2003 and his retirement in 2015.

He was a fine sportsman, footballer and triathlete, and a proud Yorkshireman and supporter of Leeds United. He maintained his Brentwood links through friendships with 1980s colleagues Brian Odell, Alan Guyver and Bill Skinner.

Richard leaves a widow, Sue, children Katie and Jonathan and a grandson, Andre. Described as well respected, popular, always cheerful and willing to lend a hand, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
