Exactly 11 years to the day it was last seen, a time capsule buried under the front lawn of Mill Hill on 13th of May 2012, was meant to be unearthed by some of the OB ladies who put it there. However, the passing of time, fading memories and a lack of exact co-ordinates retained in the boarding house through changes of Housemasters eventually defeated the efforts of the five OBs, their partners, two Housemasters (current encumbent, Tim Cope and predecessor, Mark Monro) - as well as metal detectors and spades!
Carina Hafermann (OB 2010-12), who organised the return visit, along with fellow Mill Hill OBs, Dasha Ielova, Oyin Talabi, Sarah von Rueden and Ann-Kristin Theis returned to Brentwood on May 13th 2023 hoping to dig up the capsule they buried and see what they had left.
After pacing this way and that according to their recollections, and despite their best endeavours - and information received late in the day from former Housemaster, Mr Shipway that "the box is 5 steps away from the manhole parallel to the house" - the capsule remains hidden. What is not currently hidden are several patches in the lawn revealing the dig attempts!
Despite the lack of success, Carina said "We were all so happy to be back at Mill Hill and the School. We have so nice memories of our time there. And Saturday surely was a day to remember too!"
If any other Mill Hill OB has information that might lead to the capsule's location, please get in touch.
