Philip Young - Teacher of Economics and Critical Thinking

I'm experimenting with 4.30am starts and riding 30k before school!

Why have you decided to take part in the challenge?

I love physical challenges! I missed out last year as I couldn't make the date, so this year I was determined to go. I like the fact that the challenge has 2 different aspects - hiking and biking, and North Wales is an amazing location. This region is featured in the BBCs 'SOS Extreme Rescue' and some of the mountains we're ascending are recurring rescue sites in the programme! Oooer. Still, we'll have the ride before and after the climbs to contemplate things!

Can you give us some insight into your training regime?

I'm switching from running to cycling at the moment, and building the miles. I'm experimenting with 4.30am starts and riding 30k before school. I then do a long ride at the weekend, in the region of 100k. Phew! Hiking will be tackled during the coming weeks, but there's a lack of hills or mountains in Essex, so the conditions in Wales will be somewhat harder!

Any message for potential supporters?

This is an amazing cause and will truly change a pupil's future. It will make an immeasurable difference to the life chances of the recipient and I believe it is such a worthwhile cause that I had to be involved. Make sure you follow our training and the challenge itself when the time comes. Be part of this positive change!
