"Don’t get too fixated on your end goal, but try to enjoy each step of the journey on your chosen career path."
Current Job Title & Employer:
Assistant Psychologist at Cygnet Hospital Colchester.
OB years:
2016-2018
Brief description of your path after Brentwood:
I completed a degree in Psychology at the University of Exeter, followed by a Master’s in Applied Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath. I loved the experience of both courses and being able to live in two unique cities. Following my university years, I was a Community Mental Health Support Worker for a year. This role entailed assisting people with mental health difficulties, in their own homes. The next step in my journey has brought me to my current role, working as an Assistant Psychologist at a mental health inpatient unit, where I have been for the last 6 months.
How has your career path led you to where you are now?
Being able to experience a range of different areas in the psychology field, whilst at university, helped me narrow down my focus and guide my career choices. My year as a Support Worker gave me valuable experience working with individuals with a diverse range of mental health needs. My Assistant Psychologist role has reinforced my desire to continue working in a collaborative team in an inpatient facility and to pursue my goal of becoming a Clinical Psychologist.
Did you develop any particular skills or attributes at Brentwood that have helped your career?
Doing the IB definitely helped me get to where I am today. The challenge of studying 6 different subjects, alongside the other elements of the IB, taught me to manage my time wisely and to develop a strong work ethic.
Favourite Brentwood memory?
I have so many great Brentwood memories, but one in particular is being invited to the Chinese New Year celebrations by a friend who was a boarder. It was great to be able to experience a celebration from a different culture and learn new traditions.
Any words of advice for those graduating this year?
Don’t get too fixated on your end goal, but try to enjoy each step of the journey on your chosen career path.
