As part of East and Weald House week, we are supporting Northern Soul, a community interest company currently fundraising for Danso School in Gambia. Our aim is to collect as many donations as possible in order to fill a lorry that will deliver the items to the school in Gambia.
Below, you will find a list of the items that are urgently needed for the children at Danso School.
The founder of Northern Soul, Ruth Ibegbuna, has shared a deeply moving message about how donations will have a transformational impact on the students and teachers there.
Ruth shared that many children at Danso School only have one additional outfit besides their school uniform, and they are in desperate need of resources to support their education. The teachers often teach classes of 40+ children using just one book.
As Ruth explains, “I know the headteacher struggles to support the nursery and early-stage readers, and they have no books for this age range. I saw precious few books in the whole school. I led a session out there in October, and it was so difficult. I had much respect for the teachers after that.”
This is where your generosity can make a real difference. We are asking for your support in collecting these items, which will be shipped directly to Danso School in Gambia. A large lorry will be filled with donations and shipped out, with all items arriving within 3 weeks.
Donations can be dropped off at the following locations from Monday, 24th March to Thursday, 1st May (including during the Easter Holidays):
Headmasters Reception (Ingrave Road CM15 8AS)
Courage Hall Reception (Bayman Gate, Middleton Hall Lane CM15 8EE)
If your child is in the prep, please note that we will also be launching this project as part of Lawrence House Week, so you can send donations through either the prep or senior school—there's no need to split them.
Ruth will be travelling to Gambia in the summer and plans to make a short film of the donations in action, so you will be able to see firsthand how your contributions are making a difference.
We know that many of you likely have these items around the house that are no longer needed and could be of great use to the children at Danso School. To think that these donations can be loved and used by children who truly need them in such a short time frame is exciting. We are counting on the generosity of our parents and wider community to help fill the lorry and support this incredible cause.
Thank you in advance for your kindness and support.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Warm regards,
Mrs L Chapman
